Saturday 1 August 2009, Kuching: CMS got the chance to ‘Do Good for the planet today by digging into the cool earth to support local community project ‘Trees for Life’ at the Sama Jaya Nature Reserve in Kuching.
Along with 30 volunteers from other local companies, CMS’ group of 14 employee volunteers planted new trees, laid care on existing foliage through monitoring and tagging tasks, and learned more about trees in Kuching’s only site where original forest giants grow in their natural habitat.
The ‘Trees for Life’ project, spearheaded by Sarawak Forestry Corporation and Malaysia Nature Society of Kuching, aims to restore degraded forests in the Sama Jaya Nature Reserve. The area is currently covered with highly disturbed vegetation due to infrastructure development around the area, tree-logging and wind-throw effects from storms.
According to Project Leader, Susan Teale, rehabilitation of the forest is still possible if the correct tree species are planted in gaps to reduce the “scattering” effects of storms on trees.
“We appreciate anyone who can lend a hand. Trees play a huge role in safe-guarding our environment and reducing the impacts of global warming,” said Susan Teale. Celebrating its 2nd anniversary, the ‘Trees for Life’ event this past weekend achieved the planting of 22 new trees and the monitoring of 100 existing trees.
New trees of various species were born, including local durian trees. “It is exciting; just like creating a new life that we can take care of. We can return every few months to measure the trees’ growth progress and eventually return to harvest the fruit,” said Magdelin Siput of CMS Cement.
CMS thanks their 14 dedicated volunteers from CMS Concrete Products, CMS Cement, CMS Property Development and CMS Infra Trading for ‘Doing Good’ for the community.
